Welcome to Christie’s Bistro – perhaps one of the University of Manchester’s most breath taking venues. Based in the old Science Library of Owens College, it still remains one of the institutions’, if not Manchester’s best hidden gem.
Built in 1890 as the new Study of Education, the Christies Library was a gift from the former law professor, historian and bibliophile Richard Copley Christie. For much of the twentieth century it housed the University’s principle science library. One hundred years later, and after the building of main University Library, the Christie Science Library was converted into a Bistro, steeped in the institution’s history and character, with portraits of previous Vice-Chancellors gracing the walls and endless rows of original books and documents.
Christie’s is the perfect place to relax with friends and colleagues. We offer a chilled lounge area to sit and enjoy light bites, artisan coffees and cold drinks, or a more formal dining a la carte restaurant.
The Bistro is also available for private bookings in the evening and at weekends. Please get in touch to discuss options for parties, weddings, and receptions.
